Michiel Claassen studied constitutional and administrative law, as well as international law, at Leiden University and at Spain’s University of Salamanca. Michiel was sworn in as a lawyer in 2001, in The Hague, where he began his legal career in the office of the land’s advocate. On completing his internship, Michiel moved to the Finance Ministry’s Financial Markets directorate where he dealt with topics including deposit guarantee systems and financial infrastructure. He was involved in the work that led to the Financial Supervision Act (Wft).

Michiel joined AKD’s team of lawyers at the start of 2007 working as a member of the firm’s administrative law section in Rotterdam. He is primarily engaged with general administrative procedural law and spatial planning law. He is also regularly involved in advising and litigating on issues concerning subsidies, education, the enforcement of administrative law and public authority liability. Michiel represents government institutions, companies and private individuals.

Michiel has a particular interest in electronic government and the legal questions that this throws up, for instance regarding protection of privacy. As the legal project leader from AKD, Michiel was involved during 2007 and 2008 in the joint authorisation and representation facility project (GMV, overseen by the ICTU foundation. The foundation’s purpose is to help authorities improve their ICT performance. In his role as project leader he developed contacts between a variety of government ministries and provided advice on the legal embedding of the GMV.

Interaction with and attention for his clients are two of Michiel’s chief features. He also publishes frequently on a variety of topics. He is a member of the association for administrative law (VAR) and the Rotterdam environmental lawyers society. Michiel is currently engaged in following the Grotius course specialising in environment and spatial planning.
